The Cupcake Session

So the day we did The Cupcake Session, was the same day of the anniversary of my mother's death 7 years ago. As I did this session with adorable C. I was reminded of the promise I made to my mother the day she died.

I spent years listening to my mom, in my young and naive view, harrass me about what I was doing with my life. I worked in the financial industry, lived in New York City and was very successful. But mom was always on me saying, "You hate math and finance. Why are you there? Why don't you do something creative and artistic? That's where your real talents lie." Really, I heard this so much I think I may have been saying it in my sleep.

Mom passed away three months after my son was born. And while it was an incredibly difficult time. I was given a true gift by being able to spend the last 6 weeks with her. She was surrounded by her family on her last day. Towards the end of that day, I went outside to photograph the sun setting over the water. And when I came back I made a promise to mom.

I promised her that I would do "something" with the gift for photography that I had been given.

Here I am, 7 years later, doing exactly that. And all I can think is "Oh boy...Mom was right!"

Little C. and I had a fabulous time with these cupcakes from Brownie Points Bakery in Summit, NJ. We had Red Velvet, Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate and Vanilla (ok, we didn't eat all of them. But we did have our fair share). And I thought of Mom....that she was right and that she would be proud of me today.

I love you mom and I miss you. Put in a good word for me upstairs.

I love coming up with fun ideas for sessions. These three kids were great! (I say kids trepidatiously - young adults is more like it). But we had fun and they were willing to go along with some creative ideas. In fact, K., the little sister, was instrumental in helping to pull together the style and concept of our session. She has quite the flair and energy. I totally loved her.

During our session, I asked them to all pull out their phones and pretend to text (because that's all teenagers want to do all the time anyway (lol!)) - but I think they really were texting their friends (one even texted him mom who was sitting in the room with us!) Later I had the boys doing the overprotective big brother thing. Those were so cute and fun, I was laughing the whole time I was editing. It really works out great when both I and my clients come to a session willing to get creative and playful and go with it for just the moment.

More Look Ma...No Teeth!

I've said it before and I'll say it again.....I love the "Look Ma....No Teeth" sessions. I love them because the kids are so proud of themselves - they finally feel like they've reached the big time being a big kid now. I love them because they are never shy about showing off their big toothless grins. And I love them because this is such a short window of time in their lives.

I have been watching this little boy grow up over the last few years. I think he is totally adorable, funny and gorgeous. And I think he may be even cuter with no teeth!

Sisters

Sisters. When I was young I remember what a pain it was having one. She was always getting me in trouble, always complaining about me, never letting me hang out with her and her friends (they were older, so obviously cooler). And she never wanted to let me wear her things. I used to think, "Boy it sure would be nice if I only had brothers."

Then, of course, were the good times. The family vacations, the Christmas holidays, turning the living room into a world of FisherPrice toys (the castle, village, airport, etc) playing with our barbie dolls all day long, the playing outside from dawn till dusk during the summertime. Those times were the best and I couldn't imagine NOT having my sister around.

Now that I am older, it's funny.... but sometimes I still have those same feelings. I can't stand when my sister tells me like it is and says things to me that no one else in the world would be able to get away with. And then.....there are the times that I am so glad we have each other. She knows me and my history like no one else. And there is great comfort in that.

My sister doesn't live close to me, so I don't get to see her as often as I would like. But we talk all the time. She knows that I am here for her no matter what. If she called me and said she needed me, she knows I would come running to her side. (I would go and have gone running to her side even though she didn't ask me to. Because she is my sister and I KNEW she needed me there.)

When it comes down to it, a sister is going to be the best friend you will ever have. She will know what makes you tick (and what pushes your buttons). She will tell you the truth when no one else will dare. She will let you know that come what may...she will always be there....to lean on, to cry with, to laugh with and to help you live life to the fullest.

Sis...I miss you lots. Give me a call tonite so we can chat.

Too Cute For Words, that is!

I had the opportunity to photograph this young woman recently. She will be a senior and will be heading off to college and hopefully a fabulous, wonderful musical career.

She was just too cute....the gorgeous smile, fabulous dimple, green eyes, beautiful blond hair and a personality to match. I had such a great time photographing her. The other plus was we got to pull out some fun new backgrounds that I recently acquired. I am LOVIN' the look! When she's a huge success I hope she lets me photograph her for the cover of Vanity Fair!

Oh...and little sis jumped in on the action too! I think she is going to follow in her sister's footsteps. She was so cute and a little firecracker too! I loved her!

Back 2 School is Back 2 Cool

It's August and we still have about 5 or 6 weeks before school starts. But let's be serious, we are all thinking about that first day of school. Some of us are dreading that day (the kids more than the moms) and some of us are silently (or not so silently) looking forward to that day.

One of the great traditions of each school year is the school portrait. Every year, we get our kids dressed in their best and send them off to have their image captured as one more year in their lives moves forward. Sometimes we are happy with the result and sometimes not. I find that, (okay....I'm a professional, I do this for a living, I've taken lots of classes, workshops, etc) I'm usually okay with what comes home. But what I always think in the back of my head is...this is a nice picture of my son, but it certainly doesn't reflect who he is as a person. That type of image is not what you get with the traditional school portrait.

To capture that essence of who your children are really needs a portrait experience. Time spent with your children, getting to know them, having fun with them, letting them be a little silly, letting them play and run around (cause that's what kids are about).

Barefoot in the Garden

One of the best parts of summer is being able to go barefoot. Barefoot in the garden, barefoot on the beach, barefoot at the pool.....I love my feet feeling the earth! We get to enjoy this sensation for such a short time.

As August approaches, I realize that soon school will start - along with homework, football, soccer, music and theater classes - and the time for running barefoot will be gone for the year.

I love photographing my clients outdoors and barefoot! Sometimes the little girls I photograph bring the cutest shoes (and I am such a shoe freak!) but I still make them take them off and run around letting the grass get in between their toes! And I take mine off too. So we are all running around barefoot and having fun!

There are still a few short weeks left to summer and just enough time for you to still take off your shoes for a Barefoot in the Garden session. So Much To Be Excited About!

There is just so much to be excited about these days! Let's start with the great session with the W. girls. There was just tulle, tulle everywhere! I LOVED it!!!! (It made me wish I had a little girl. I don't think there is any chance my 7 year old son is going to let me dress him in tulle and play princess for a day. LOL!)

Then, for those of you who have been following my blog for a while, you may have noticed a big change. I have changed the name of my business from GSC Photography to Gail Cushing Photography. There is a lot of work involved in making this change but I am very excited about all the great things coming down the pike. A BIG SHOUT OUT to Barbara and Betsy at Different by Design. They helped me with a huge labor of love....my new logo! Don't you just love it! I do. It's fun and fresh and a little sassy - and a great reflection of me and my photography style. Kudos to you Barbara and Betsy for hanging in there with me and creating this awesome logo for me! You can check out more of their work at www.differentbydesignnj.com .

Down The Shore

So I was sitting here this morning "Down the Shore" (a truly Jersey phrase) contemplating all that down the shore means to me. Here I am drinking my coffee, watching the sun come up over the water, trying to catching what little breeze we are going to have on what is going to be a hot and humid day, and all I can think is....this is so NOT what is being broadcast about New Jersey on TV these days.

This is what Down The Shore is for me.....

- Slow mornings with a cup of coffee, saying good morning to the ocean - before anyone else gets there.
-Taking a walk along the boardwalk at Seaside Park or Island Heights.

-Going to Mrs. ObCo's for fresh donuts first thing in the morning before they sell out.
-Watching the sailboat races on Barnegat Bay on Saturday mornings from the bulkhead.
-Crabbing off the pier in Island Heights and trying to figure if fish heads or chicken skin is the best bait.
-Waiting till after the first full moon in July to go crabbing because that's when the crabs will be over 5 inches.
-Watching my husband and son play in the waves and body surf together - knowing that this is what my husband's father did with him and what my son will someday do with his son.
-The annual family gathering and days filled with so much laughter and good conversation.
-The whole family building sandcastles together.
-Coming home from a day at the beach and pulling together a fabulous seafood meal with lobster and crab and corn on the cob and eating till we're stuffed!
-Grabbing a seat under the tree with a glass of wine and having some quiet conversation after a full day of activities.
-The Fourth of July Bike parade in Seaside Park - with all the families and their decorated bikes and the kids riding as fast as they can past the fire truck's gushing fire hose - while the mom's stand back trying to figure out how to get past without getting soaked.
-Arriving Down The Shore and going "Once Around the Lagoon" before we head to the house.
-Staying at the beach all day till that "perfect light" arrives and just watching the beauty that is The Jersey Shore.

My summers are filled with moments that will take my breath away for years to come. They are calm and beautiful and special times that I know I will never forget.

Taking the Indoors Out

We had a little bit of fun last week. I have this cool, funky chair I got at Home Again, a totally awesome furniture consignment shop in New Providence. I love this store and have gotten some really cool things there. You should check it out. (http://www.homeagaindesignnj.com ).

My little friend, C. and I took my chair out into my garden to have a change of scenery. I loved the idea of taking something and putting it where you normally wouldn't see it. And then I had a little more fun creating a beautiful work of art for her that looks a little like the Anthropologie ads! She is such a cool, hip little girl! Love her!!!!

International Competition

A little over 4 years ago, I joined Professional Photographers of America (PPA). This organization is dedicated to helping professional photographers learn, grow and continually improve in their chosen art form, not only in artistic and technical aspects, but also in ways that help photographers grow their business. It has been an incredibly inspirational resource for me and joining PPA is one of the best things I have done since I have decided to become a professional photographer.

Each year, PPA holds its international competition with thousands of professional photographers from all over the world participating. Images scoring a certain level of points earn merits that we photographers need in order to obtain our Craftsman Degree from PPA. Earning the Craftsman designation is a goal I am pursuing. This year...I'm ready to compete among this esteemed group of professionals and earn those merit points.

It is a daunting proposition....putting images that I have created and that I love in front of a group of very demanding judges for their critique. (Not something for one who can't handle criticism well). In striving to be the best professional photographer I can be and in preparing for participation in this competition I have taken numerous technical workshops, read countless books on art and photography and lighting and posing and the entire process of creating beautiful and impactful images. I have mentored with some of the best photographers around and have found a network of colleagues to provide support and advice and sometimes even a kick in the butt.

Choosing the images was also a challenging prospect. Of the thousands of images I have taken, I can only enter four. The following four are what I feel are the best of my work to date. I have met with competition advisors asking their thoughts, opinions and advice, have shown them to my closest champions, have worked with these images to take them to their highest level for show.

And now....I'm ready.....
Ready, good or bad what the judges say. (of course I hope for the best). I know my work can stand against those of the best in the business.

But participating in this competition is not just about having my work judged...it is another step in my learning process as a professional photographer. I will listen to the judges comments (I am having the critiques videotaped and I think I'll have a glass of wine before I watch those tapes! LOL!), I will learn from them. I will see the work of other amazing professional photographers and learn what makes what they do special also.

Am I nervous? Of course, it is not easy to put one's art, one's self on the line for others to judge. But I am doing it because I want to create the most beautiful images I am capable of...and I will never stop striving for excellence. Carpe Diem!!

Look Ma...No Teeth!!!!

I have been waiting patiently for J. to give us the okay to photograph him. Finally, we got the go ahead for one of my favorite type of sessions....the Look Ma...No Teeth! Series. I love how kids at this stage feel so cool and grown up just because their front teeth have fallen out. (Puts a kid's view of the world in perspective, doesn't it!?!) We got to do this session with one of my favorite props, my mushroom seats. They are just very fun and whimsical and out of the ordinary (and when you put them together and lie on top of them, it's like you are flying!!!! )
And when one of your best buds comes along for the session....you get some real giggles and laughs out of the day!

A special rite of passage

First Holy Communion is a very special rite of passage for children in the Catholic Church. And so it is important to document this auspicious event. At the same time, as a photographer specializing in children's portraiture, I cannot help but also want to document the fun and excitement that these young children are experiencing. The sacrament of communion is a solemn affair, but the age and innocence of these children is also something to be revered and treasured.

As we move away from communion season, I am proud of the images I have been able to create and I feel a certain privilege to have been included as a part of this very special time in the lives of these children.

The beauty of a child's smile, the sound of a child's laughter, the wonderful, uninihibited energy of a child....these are all things that remind of of what is right with the world and should not be overlooked or underestimated.

These images of S. make me smile. We had fun outside on a gorgeous afternoon. S. got to romp and play and have just a bit of fun, along with appreciating the wonderous occasion of her first holy communion.

The Cutest Little Girls

I recently had to opportunity to photograph a dance class for Elefante Music. What a fabulous time we all had. The girls aged 3 - 5 all had a terrific time dancing and playing with their teacher! I had a fabulous time watching them turn, twirl, curtsy and pirouette. The room was bright and airy, the teacher was wonderful, the girls were adorable! (makes me wish I had a little girl to dress up in a ballet outfit and send over to Elefante's Dance class! - Oh well, coach/pitch baseball has its benefits! Back to the baseball diamond for me.)

I had a recent communion portrait experience with J. We had so much fun! The church still had beautiful flowers in bloom from Easter services and the day was so beautiful. Her dress was so beautiful. But Sr. Margaret was right....she saw Julia during her session and said she was as beautiful on the outside as she was on the inside!

'Tis the season"! No not Christmas, silly! It's spring time!! Yippee! This weekend its supposed to be fabulous and warm. And all I can say it...it's about time!

It's time to go outside, play on the playground, swing on the swings, start thinking about what new plants to plant in the garden...in other words...my favorite time of the year!

Staying In on a Snowy Day

Another Snowy Day! It's times like this....mid-february, cold, snowy, stuck inside again....that make me yearn for spring. But despite being inside, there is always fun to be found (remember the Cat in the Hat?!?)

These images were taken on another snowy morning. I love the warmth of the colors and the gorgeous faces of these kids. We even got their dog in on the fun!

Seniors 2011

I have known this young woman since she was about 3 years old. She was an absolute joy as a young child...so cute, fun and full of life! And it has been a privilege to watch her grow up to the fabulous woman she is today. She is on the brink of launching her own life. It is such an exciting time for her...and for her family! To see her accomplish what she dreams of and puts her mind to.... It makes one understand that the future is full of hope.

This time of her life is so special and it happens only once. Capturing her spirit, beauty and joy is a gift I can give to her and her family for years to come.

All that being said, I am launching my Seniors 2011 Model Program. Interested juniors, graduating in June 2011, can apply to be a model rep for GSC Photography. In exchange for helping to promote GSC Photography, my 2011 reps will receive a free model session, model cards that they can pass out to all their friends (who then receive a discount on their senior portrait session), rewards and points towards cool gifts.

Pink, Pink, Pink

Getting in the spirit of Valentine's Day and wanting to be very girly.......

Every once in a while I feel the need to express my girly side. My little friend here helped me do that. I did something very different for me...using a full blown studio set up rather than a more environmental photographic approach. We LOVED the results and had a fabulous time in the meantime.

What I Am Thankful For

This past week has been an incredibly tumultuous and difficult one. Last Wednesday, my 14 year old niece was diagnosed with a brain tumor and admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital. On Thursday, the neurosurgeons were able to fully remove this large piece of goop from her head (that is how I explained it to my 6 year old son - in very technical terms!) There were tough times and close calls. Just when I thought every thing would be okay, another crisis would emerge. Thankfully, as of this morning, she is well on the road to a full recovery.

This difficut time has helped me hyper-focus on what really matters and what is really important. And as we approach this Thanksgiving holiday, I wanted to talk about what I am thankful for.

I am thankful for....

The doctors, nurses, caregivers and ancillary staff of Yale-New Haven Hospital...
for saving my niece's life and giving her a second chance. It is a gift they have given not only to my niece, but to our entire family. The helped us navigate an incredibly difficult time. Thank you.

I am thankful for...

My family (John, Bobby, Tara and Dave) for completely understanding when plans had to suddenly change and they said "Don't worry about it....do what you have to do. Go and be with your sister. That's what matters." I love you all so much and am incredibly blessed to have you as my family.

I am thankful for...

My friends. What a fabulous support network you have all been. From helping make sure Bobby was picked up and taken to school, taken care of when I couldn't be there...to your prayers, kind words, positive thoughts and general concern. I love that I live in this community. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Thank you so much.

I am thankful for....

my niece. She is alive and kicking and has had to endure more than any child should ever have to endure. She faced her fear and pain with grace and dignity. She is a strong young woman, and I can't wait to see what she does with her life!

I am thankful for....

my sister. For accepting with quiet grace that I wasn't going to listen to her and stay in New Jersey. That I was going to go to New Haven and sit by her side. She, too has had to endure more than someone would in their life. She continues to do so with grace and dignity. And while she may not think so....I believe my sister to be one of the strongest and most courageous people I know. I love you...you are priceless.

Last, but not least, I am thankful for finally listening to my mother and "doing something" (as she used to say) with this gift I have for photography. I get to do something I love and am passionate about, I get to share it with other people, I get to bring smiles to the faces of these families, and I get to give them something they can treasure for years to come.

Growing Up

I just finished editing the slide show for this family's recent session. I loved what came from that session so much, I had to get it up on my blog.

I met this mom through a friend of mine (thank you friend!) at a birthday luncheon several spring seasons ago, and I have been lucky enough to photograph her family each fall for the last 3 years. I have watched her children grow, seen her move into a beautiful new home and helped her and her husband compile an album that encompasses images from multiple sessions.

As I edited this session, I was once again reminded of how quickly our children grow and how fleeting our time is with them when they are young. I love that this family wants to document their childhood and to create keepsakes that will become family heirlooms for future generations. The holiday season is fast approaching and it is a time to remember that, through it all, the most important thing we have is our family.

Fleeting Moments

I got a call a short while ago from a friend whose daughter I photographed about a year ago. She asked me to come by and photograph her 4 children (before the winter set in) doing what they usually do on sunny afternoons....playing in the yard, pushing a stroller, riding a bike, eating ice cream cones. As I talked with my friend about how she envisioned her portrait session, we both understood she wanted to do this because we know this special time will pass all too quickly. She wanted to capture this moment in time, so that she could hold it dear for years to come.

As I sit here and look at my son (now with 4 less teeth than at the beginning of the year), well into first grade, a full fledged flag football fanatic....I too am pondering just how precious and fleeting this time is.

I'm so glad my friend called. Things worked out that I was able to photograph her children the next day. It was an incredibly warm and sunny day (in the midst of the monsoon season here). It was meant to be. I hope she sees these images as special and as wonderful as I do.

The Moods of Mother Nature

It is cold, windy and rainy today. Not a day for playing outside. It seems Mother Nature is intent on reminding us that winter is just around the corner, so appreciate the nice weather while you can. (I just wish she didn't feel the need to drive home that message all weekend long).

A few weeks ago I was able to photograph this family on a really lovely day. It was later in the afternoon, my favorite time to photograph, and the lighting worked out wonderfully. There was a time, however, when we weren't sure we would ever be able to pull off this portrait session. I was lucky enough to meet this family because they won a gift certificate from one of the fundraisers I participate in every year. Well, we had originally planned to meet in early June, just before the summer start. We had to coordinate 2 sisters, their 4 children and their grandparents. We had to work around school schedules, sports and afterschool activities, one sister coming up from South Jersey, conflicting vacation schedules.....you know....daily life and all that entails.

We were able to work through all those (moms will find a way!!!) The thing we couldn't work through...you got it....Mother Nature. Every time we were set for our session, the wind kicked up, the rain came down, the sky rumbled and our plans were spoiled.

But, lo and behold, we finally got an afternoon where all the stars aligned!!! The weather cooperated, the children got to play in their grandparents backyard and I was able to capture some lovely images of three generations of a family.

As I sit here and look out at the miserable weather and dread going to stand in the rain for school pick up, I look at these images and know....better days are ahead!

A Little Halloween Fun

In our house, my son has enjoyed dressing up in costumes since he was very little. Sometimes they would be costumes from previous halloweens (our lion costume), sometimes from trips we've taken (Jack Sparrow from DisneyWorld), sometimes gifts from Santa Claus (the astronaut outfit and helmet - one of my favorites), and sometimes just things he would find around the house (vests, belts, hats, dad's suit jacket and ties). There are times when I feel like everyday is halloween around here.

But there really is something special about Halloween. It's a day when we all get to use our imagination and play for just a little while - whether you are a child or an adult. I think it's so much fun to get caught up in creating and playing these characters for an afternoon and evening(and who doesn't love the chocolate?!?! Come on, admit it....do you raid your children's halloween buckets after they have gone to bed? I sure do...it's one of my guilty pleasures.

On Saturday and Sunday, October 24th and 25th, I will be hosting a special Halloween Mini-Portrait Session event. An Afternoon in the Park

I photographed this session earlier this year, but it is still one of my favorites. I wanted to share with you what a full session with me is like - the full breadth and depth of what I try to capture during a portrait session. This is also my first attempt at uploading and sharing video. And as much as I use technology on a regular basis....going through the process drove home the fact that ..."I am an artist...not an engineer". Good thing I'm married to one though.

It's Hard To Smile When You Are Hungry

Do you ever watch "The Actor's Studio"? At the end of each interview, the guest is asked to answer a series of questions, one of which is "What is your favorite sound?" Time and time again, I hear the response..."My child's laughter." It's mine too. I love to hear my son playing with his dad and giggling his head off. To me it is such a comforting sound. I know he is happy, I know that he is safe and, in that moment, I know that he feels that all is right with the world.

But I also know that there are so many mothers and fathers right here in New Jersey who don't hear that wonderful sound. Every night in New Jersey there are thousands of children that are going to bed hungry and every morning there are so many children being sent to school not having had a decent breakfast - not because they don't want to eat, but because their families can't afford to put food on the table.

Every fall, I run a fundraiser with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey. The CFBNJ is a fabulous organization that works hard to help families right here in New Jersey ease the burden of worrying how they are going to feed their children. What A Summer It Was!

Where did the time go?!?!? We had a fabulous, crazy, busy summer. And it went by way too fast! I know it's been some time since my last post. So to my loyal followers....thanks for hanging in there.

This was the last summer before my son started first grade, so I was feeling like it was a very special time for us. Sort of like a last hurrah before he heads out into the world. We spent time traveling to visit friends and exploring new places, going to our town pool, to the beach and some days just lounging in our back yard.

During an excursion to Home Goods (I just love that store), I found these great mushroom stools to use for props and my son agreed to a portrait session in our back yard. Hope you like them. We had a lot of fun (I think my son is a budding musician!)

Keep tabs on the blog...the posts will be more frequent. While we did lots of fun stuff this summer, there were also some great portrait sessions (which I will be posting here) and lots of planning for the fall. I will be updating you on my fall fundraiser with the Community FoodBank of NJ, new sessions, events, products and the like. Summer is over, fall is in full swing and it's back to work!

The Importance of Fun

One of the things I really try to encourage with my clients is a sense of playfulness during our portrait sessions. It's one of the things that I think makes me different as a photographer and artist. Being able to let go, have fun and even be a little silly is so wonderful. Our lives are filled with so many stressors on a regular basis....work, home, school, sports, extra-curricular activities, volunteering..... I could go on and on, but I don't want to stress anyone out! Taking time to just goof off for a little bit helps to keep this whole thing called life in perspective.

I recently photographed this family who totally got it! While the weather was not what we were exactly hoping for....we let that go and had a bit of fun. I especially love the silly faces at the end. They made me giggle.

I LOVE WHAT I DO!!!!!

I really am looking forward to the coming of summer because outdoor portrait experiences are my favorite. These images from a recent session were taken on gorgeous (but very hot) day, at an outdoor location with some amazing gardens and architecure. It was a day full of fun and surprises and tons and tons of giggles. With young children involved in a portrait experience, going with the flow allows for some incredible moments. We might not always get what we planned for... but we are NEVER disappointed. (Promising them ice cream when they are done helps things a bit too.)

I really do consider myself to be incredibly lucky to be able to do something that I love so much and that makes other people so happy at the same time. My cup runneth over!

Mother's Day is on the horizon

I find this holiday a bittersweet one for me. On the one hand, I love celebrating with my son and husband. I always get breakfast in bed (I'm hoping for chocolate chip waffles with strawberries this year....hint, hint!), beautiful flowers, wonderful cards with heartfelt messages and usually, some much needed and appreciated mommy quiet time! It is always a fun day, filled with love and happiness, and hugs and kisses (always the best part about being a mom!)

But on the other hand....I find myself spending a lot of time thinking about my own mom on this day. Unfortunately, my mom is no longer with us. She lost her long struggle with cancer a few months after my son was born.

As I have traveled my journey through this adventure called motherhood, I find myself understanding more about my mother now, than I ever did while she was here. There are stories and moments I wish I could share with her. There are times, even now, 5 years later, where I find myself thinking...."Oh...I should call mom and tell her this. It will really make her laugh." Most often, I wish I could call her and say...."I totally get it now mom" and, of course, "I love you mom".

Recently, I have been thinking about my portrait sessions and what are some of the moments I enjoy most. And I have found that, consistently, it is what I like to call my "Mommy Love" images. During each session, I ask to photograph mom with each child individually. But what I like to do is to try to capture that feeling that a mother and child have for each other. I feel these images are timeless and priceless. My goal is to create an heirloom for a family that will reflect the love that passes between mother and child and that can be enjoyed for years and generations to come.

As I have spent time reminiscing about my own mother, I realized that I have no photographs of my mother and I together (except for one from my wedding day). Ironic, isn't it. That I am a professional photographer and yet I have no images documenting the relationship between my mother and I. And, of course I realize that, probably, I am so focused on those relationship images for that very reason.

Mother's Day is such a special day. A day for celebration, appreciation, reflection. It is a day that should be filled with the overwhelming love we have for our children and to be thankful for every day we have with them and with our own mothers.

The Smile of a Child

The smile of a child can alter the course of your day. The day of this session started out as a very challenging one on the personal side ...but once we got going in our "Look Ma...No Teeth" mini-session, the laughs and giggles helped to alter my perspective on the day. And how could it not. To try to coax the laughs and smiles, I have to use all sorts of humor....sometimes the boy humor, while it may be a bit coarse...makes me laugh the hardest. I'll leave to your imagination what we were laughing about...but his mom was laughing right along with us (I think..... I hope). Thanks for the smiles.

Little Baby......

As I get ready to plan my son's 6th birthday celebration, I find myself reminising about earlier days. Little baby hands, little baby feet, little baby lips.....need I say more.

They told me the time would pass so quickly. (Of course, like any mom, there were days when I didn't believe that this comment was based at all in reality). But here I am realizing that my days of snuggles and kisses goodbye and holding hands as we cross the street are coming to a close. Of course, it is a bittersweet realization.

I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who have stopped me to tell me how much you are enjoying my blog and the images I have been sharing with you. As an artist, when someone tells you that your work inspires them and brings them a certain pleasure... well, that is an inspiration in itself. Thank you.

Wanna Play?!?

I got up this morning at 5:30 to start my day. I never thought I would be the type of person to willingly get up this early. I used to make fun of my parents because they would get up before the crack of dawn and never sleep in. Of course, now I am saying, "Sorry, I just didn't understand". But now I do.

I really enjoy the quiet of the morning and find I can get so much done before my son gets up and starts our day. There is always some sort of activity and excitement once he rises for the day. And, once he's up, I rarely get to sit down again before lunch time (Unless, I'm in the car of course).

Which brings me to thoughts on one of my recent mini-sessions. This great little girl wanted to include one of her closest friends. I'm so glad she did. It made her a little more at ease and we all ended up having a very fun time. And when it came time to do images of just my client's daughter, her little friend even helped as my assistant, holding my reflector, etc. What a great shoot!

The other thing I really enjoyed about this shoot was it's playfulness. While this little girl is certainly her own woman, she was more than happy to play, try some different ideas and even came up with a couple of her own. And even though it was a mini-session, we were able to get comfortable enough with each other to get to the essence of who she is and to see more than just one side of her. We got the playfulness, the quiet and calm side and (while they are not posted here) some wonderful, loving images of her and her mom together.

The Coming of Spring

It happens every year right around late February, early March....the yearning for spring takes over. Usually I start searching for a new home to move into....(much to my husband's chagrin and confusion- he never has any idea we were planning on moving). This year, I find I am settled and happy that we will be in our home for a long time. Instead, as the yearning for the end of winter grows stronger, I find myself being drawn to bolder and brighter colors! I was shopping for some new background materials this pas week - planning on buying grays, blues and black - and I came home with fuscia and bright orange and blue silks. I can't wait to try them out!

I have also found I am loving when my clients are putting on bright vibrant colors. Last week's post with the little girl in her brightly colored costumes started me down the path of searching for spring. And it continued as I photographed a recent mini-session this adorable little girl and her mom in bright reds and pinks! I loved the colors! I had a difficult time creating black and white images - because I just thought the colors were so wonderful!

Here is to the end of winter and the beginning of all things new again!!!!

Mommy, Look At Me Now

I love that age when it's all about the dressing up. I love doing portrait sessions when a child gets to play and have fun and not worry about sitting the right way or smiling at the right time. It's sessions like these that let the true nature of a child shine through. And I love being allowed into their world for just a short time to share the fun, play a little and laugh a lot.

These images are from a recent session with a little girl (almost 4 years old) and what a riot she, her mom and I had that day. Enjoy!

One of the things I love best about location sessions is that every session is different and holds unexpected surprises. I have photographed communion portraits at this local church before - but this past week, my assistant and I noticed a different lay of the light through the stained glass windows and were able to use it in a new way. The colors through these multi-colored windows created an ethereal light that made for a lovely portrait. Here are a few from that session.

The Innocence of Childhood

As I worked through the images of a recent session, I found myself continually reflecting on the innocence of children. How lucky are we to live in a society and culture that values the age of childhood? Childhood is supposed to be a time for joy, love, and fun. It is a time for children to be cuddled and protected by their parents. I think there cannot be too many hugs and kisses given when our children are young. The time of childhood passes quickly - we need to fully embrace the art of these moments. LIFE IS ART! Appreciate it to its fullest!

"Look Ma....No Teeth!"

I love this image! I love the big gap, no teeth and the pure joy on his face! I was reminded once again how quickly time passes, when my son lost his tooth a short time ago. Before we know it, the new one was growing in. And in one day, from morning till evening, I was shocked at how much that one tooth came in.

The time of "Lost Teeth" is so short. But I love this time so much, I have decided to introduce my "Look Ma...No Teeth" mini-sessions. These portrait sessions are 30 - 45 minutes long (about half the time of a regular session), and can include up to 2 children. The cost of the session is $50 and will include a set of 8 wallet portraits of the same image. The Communion Season Fast Approaches

While the Super Bowl just ended (yeah Steelers!), planning for Spring Events has already started. I love photographing communion sessions. The girls get to dress like a princess for a day, the boys look so handsome, and mom and dad are always so proud. Their little children are growing up!

I am starting to book communion portrait sessions. For those of you that call before April 1, 2009 and reserve your child's communion session, you will receive 25 custom-designed fine art cards (a value of $60).

A Successful Fundraiser

During the last few months of 2008 I held a fundraising campaign for the Community FoodBank of NJ. With the help of some wonderful families in my area, I was able to donate over $1300 to the FoodBank on their behalf. I had been wanting to use may talents and skills as a photographer to help a charitable organization - but it took a little reflection to decide which charity was the right one for me to support.

My decision to work to raise funds for the FoodBank is rooted in lessons I learned from my parents. When I was young, my parents worked to help many local food pantries and soup kitchens. They, especially my mother, sought to bring relief in many different forms to families and children living in economically deprived areas.

In certain ways, I feel that this campaign was not only a way for me to help families in need in New Jersey, but also an homage to my mother.

Thanks to all those families that participated in this year's fundraiser.

Welcome to My Blog!

I have recently been wanting to photograph children who have recently lost their teeth. My decision was spurred by a portrait session I had this fall with a great family from my area. Their son had lost his two front teeth, but rather than trying to hide this during our session, he let them shine. His enthusiasm was fabulous!

This shot was pretty much my favorite of the day!

After that session I started noticing more kids with no teeth. Some were shy about it, but most were not. And I started thinking about kids growing up and how wonderful (and challenging) each stage can be. Then, low and behold, I took my son to the dentist and she let me know his front teeth were on their way out! I can't wait to grab a few shots after his fall out.
